Unit I | The Nurse Aide in Long-Term Care Unit objectives: At the end of this unit, as evidenced by a minimum grade of 80% on the unit test, the student will be able to:

  1. Provide an overview of health care organisations and long-term care facilities and the methods used for payment of the services that clients receive.
  2. Discuss the role of the Nurse Aide in long-term care.
  3. Explain delegation as it relates to the Nurse Aide.
  4. Explain the impact of professionalism on potential employment for a Nurse Aide.

    1. Private Pay | a patient pays for health care from personal resources
    2. Group Insurance | client's health care is paid for by insurance that the client has previously paid
    3. Medical Aid | medical assistance program for low-income clients pays for the client's health care
    4. Medicaer
      • health insurance program for clients over the age of 65 pays for client's health care
      • funded by Social Services
      • Minimum Data Set (MDS) report required for each Medical client
  3. Role of the Nurse Aide in Long-term Care Facilities
    1. Ministry of Health regulation
      1. Set standards of care for long-term care facilities
      2. requires all nurse aides in long-term care facilities to:
        1. complete a training program
        2. pass the certification exam
